WAYNESVILLE, Mo. - Jalen Martin captured the district title at 170 pounds Saturday as Jefferson City will send eight wrestlers this week's state tournament.
Martin, a sophomore, went 3-0 in the Class 4 District 3 Tournament to take the title. Martin (43-2) won two his matches by fall, including a victory in 1:47 against Dallas McGee of Kickapoo in the title match.
"Jalen has done a great job, he's stayed focused all season," Jays coach Phil Cagle said.
Jefferson City captured the team title as well, finishing with 154 points. Waynesville was second with 151, while Rock Bridge took third in the 13-team event with 150.5.
It's the first district wrestling title for Jefferson City since 2004, the last year of eight-team districts. The current format of super districts started in 2005.
"This title was a total team effort," Cagle said. "Everybody who went for us contributed in some way and did a wonderful job."
