More than $1 million in unclaimed property returned

State Treasurer Clint Zweifel has returned more than $1 million in unclaimed property to seven account owners since November.

He currently holds $810 million in unclaimed property belonging to 4.7 million account owners, including 71 accounts with more than $100,000.

The seven accounts include: an Illinois resident with the amount totaling $146,000 in 34 separate accounts including stock liquidation; a trust in St. Louis which contained two accounts and totaled $107,000; a California resident with four accounts totaling $126,000; two matured certificates of deposit worth $111,000 to an individual in St. Peters; a business in St. Louis totaling $1,100,000 in an insurance policy; a trust in St. Louis made up of a single account worth $185,000 from liquidated mutual fund shares; and a corporation in St. Louis made up of 110 accounts totaling $241,000.

All accounts Zweifel holds, including those that went to out-of-state residents, were reported to his office with an address in Missouri and are under his jurisdiction.

In December, Zweifel unveiled a program that allows Missourians to donate their unclaimed property to one of 20 charitable organizations. More than half of all Missourians can search, claim or donate their property entirely online without any paper.
