Second suspect in home invasion, assault arrested

Miller County officials said Thursday they arrested Bruce D. Maylee, 54, Iberia, this week on Cole County charges of first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and felonious restraint.

Maylee was the second of two men charged with a Jan. 27 break-in at a home in the 400 block of Hickory Street, just after 10 p.m.

After Maylee was charged Jan. 29, Associate Circuit Judge Thomas L. Sodergren set his bond at $250,000.

Attorney Cody Dewayne Edwards of Camdenton on Wednesday asked Sodergren to reduce that bond.

Police said Maylee and Robert Stegeman, 50, Jefferson City, tied up a man and woman living at the Hickory Street home, and beat the man - breaking his jaw, a finger and fracturing one of his eye sockets.

Officials have not named the victims.

A police probable cause statement said that, while fighting with the man, Maylee struck him with a pistol and choked him until he passed out.

Investigators said Maylee and Stegeman were demanding $3,250, which the male victim said he did not have.

The victims identified Maylee and Stegeman in photo lineups.

A witness told authorities that, earlier in January, the male victim of the assault stole $3,000 from Maylee for a drug transaction.

Police said they were working to bring Maylee back to Jefferson City for further interviews.

Online court records show no date has been set for Maylee's first court appearance.
