Your Opinion: GOP, churches and responsibility

I'm writing in response to Joseph D. Salcedo's letter published on Jan. 26. It seems to me that his rant against the cruel GOP and uncaring Christian churches exposes the extreme fear the Democrat leftists have regarding the public's negative perception and rejection of their socialist agenda.

I'm not by any means a Bible scholar but I would like to challenge Salcedo to write and tell your reader's where in the Bible it states that it is God's will that the poor be cared for by a government forcibly confiscating workers wages.

My Christian belief has always been that the Bible was written as a guide for a Christian's personal behavior rather than for support of a socialistic government. Based on this belief, I try to tithe (to give 10 percent) to various Christian-based, non-profit organizations that do feed the poor as well as spread God's word for others to do the same. I believe that the purpose of a church is to share the Bible message such that each individual will also strive to do that such that the poor are cared for. If that were the case there would be no need for any socialistic government programs. Salcedo, this is the way it was before the New Deal and the Great Society that has created more poverty and debt than ever in the history of the United States.

I think it's time for all Christians to stand up for individual responsibility in accordance with God's law for the poor instead of allocating the responsibility to an unfeeling, uncaring impersonal bureaucratic government. Mr. Salcedo, this is the message the GOP and hopefully all Christian churches are conveying to the American people. The problem both organizations have in being successful with that message are people like you who would rather delegate their responsibilities to anyone such that you can sleep at night believing you have really done something for the poor and forgetting about who you have made poor by the confiscation of their assets!
