Your Opinion: Tolerance needed on poverty, abortion

Dear Editor:

I am growing truly weary of seeing two subjects in the newspaper: arrogant wealthier people bashing the poor and; people harping on the evils of abortion.

Not too long ago I read a piece in the Opinion section of the News Tribune that, to paraphrase, said poor people should go get an education to get a better job if they want more money. Then, in the Jan. 15 edition of the paper another arrogant person wrote "Republicans are producers and the Democrats take from the producers."

There are many poor people who are physically or mentally disabled, seniors on fixed incomes, and individuals who, for one reason or another, were unable to obtain a higher education that would enable one to get a decent-paying job. Not to mention the fact that CEOs have been shipping jobs out of the country for years, thus reducing the ability for many to obtain decent employment.

We can't all be brain surgeons and scientists. If an individual is fortunate enough to have had the support of a good family and was able to succeed in school and business, they should be thanking the good Lord for their blessings instead of bashing other people.

Admittedly, there are people who "work the system," but there are many more who just are doing the best they can. And look who makes up the majority of people in poverty - women and children.

This brings me to the subject of abortion. I am not crazy about the thought of abortion, but I do see instances when it might be necessary. And, I certainly would not claim to know another woman's situation. I would prefer to see abortion kept legal and safe.

Why is it that women are the only ones who are not allowed their freedoms? I'm tired of politicians that keep putting up barriers to this type of service, and/or trying to impose their religious beliefs on others. It would be great if everyone practiced abstinence as a form of birth control, but realistically, that just will not happen in our culture.

Therefore, I would much prefer that we provide birth control to everyone who wants it. Birth control would reduce the need for abortion. Interestingly, men usually are never even mentioned.

You know, Jesus was a gentleman. Maybe we could all try to be a little more tolerant and understanding.
