Your Opinion: Enabling irresponsibility

Dear Editor:

Remember the story about Maribel, the single mother of two who thought McDonald's should raise her pay because she needed more money to support her kids? Today, in the Mobile Press-Register (we are on vacation) I read about Ashley.

Ashley, a young black woman who appears to be another single mom, has five kids. The focus of the article was that she and her family were now back in a home after living in the Salvation Army's Center for Women & Children. The home is owned by the pastor of a local church.

The point of the article was to outline the good being done by the newspaper and the Salvation Army's joint program to provide assistance to homeless families. As usual the point that was missing from the article was any mention of Ashley's responsibility for her situation. She was portrayed as person who was a victim of circumstances.

One circumstance that certainly was within her control was not getting pregnant five times. Not only did she get pregnant five times, she apparently managed to get pregnant by scum who refuse to support their children.

The article mentioned she had a health care certification, in addition to being a high school graduate. Do we assume that she has somehow not learned about the reproductive process? More likely, her attitude is; why be bothered with birth control when the federal government will force someone else to provide food, shelter, health care, babysitting services and an education for her and her children.

Nothing was mentioned about why the father/s of her five children are not being required to support their children.

No one wants Ashley's kids to be hungry or homeless, but a system that allows her to have five, at taxpayer's expense, is obviously broken. She is young, should she be allowed to continue to have another child every year or two, while government forces responsible people to pay higher taxes to support such irresponsible behavior?

Are we so politically correct that we refuse to even acknowledge the government sponsored lack of accountability in our society?
