Our Opinion: Time to plan New Year's celebrations

Father Time's 2014 hourglass was running low. He sat before the holiday fireplace with the New Year's baby, 2015, planning the transition.

In the waiting room were Mother Nature, John Barleycorn and Common Sense.

Mother Nature was the first one called.

"Mom," Father Time said, "the baby and I were wondering what you'll be bringing during the New Year's holiday."

"Some cold temperatures here, but no winter nastiness in the form of sleet, snow or ice. Of course, as you know, I've been known to change my mind on short notice. Why?"

"Just planning ahead," Father Time said. "Those Missouri Highway Patrol folks care a lot about motorists' safety. They're always advising travelers to check the forecast and drive according to conditions. The even have a number, 1-888-275-6636, where motorists can check road conditions."

A tapping on the window drew their attention. Outside, looking in, was a skeletal figure draped in a black robe and holding a scythe.

"Who's that?" asked Mother Nature.

"The Grim Reaper," Father Time answered. "Every year, he tries to get in on the planning. Last year, we were able to keep him out. No fatalities were recorded during the New Year's counting period. However, the toll included 380 traffic crashes, resulting in 147 injuries." He paused. "That reminds me, send in John Barleycorn.

"John," Father Time said, "I know you represent everyone who drinks alcoholic beverages and I know New Year's celebrations often include alcohol, but could you just ask the imbibers not to drive after they've been drinking."

"I'll try," John said, "but once alcohol impairs judgment, they won't listen to me. Planning in advance is a job for Common Sense."

"Well, get him in here."

"He left," John said. "You know how he's always coming and going."

"Well, we need him, particularly during the New Year's holiday. He can encourage people to use the Sober Driver program, sponsored by the Jefferson City Police Department and Fechtel Beverage."

"How's that work?" John asked.

"Free taxi rides from drinking establishments can be arranged by calling 636-7102. Hosts of private parties also can make arrangements, in advance, by calling Police Sgt. Doug Ruediger, 634-6397, or Fechtel Beverage, 635-5161."

"Sounds easy enough."

"It is. And it's better than starting the new year with an accident, an injury or a date with that Grim Reaper guy out there. Planning ahead saves lives."

They turned their attention to the baby, who sported a black top hat and a sash that read: "Have a Safe and Happy 2015."
