Rosewood Music in Jefferson City has been renovating its 222 W. Dunklin St. guitar shop since a pipe burst last February causing damage throughout the building. But the forced renovation also offered an opportunity to expand Rosewood's space and lesson offerings.

Construction started in November to replace the 1885-built house's former back porch with two new lesson rooms, which will be used by Rosewood's current guitar teacher and two new teachers beginning in mid-January.

"We dealt with not the best room for lessons for 13-14 years. It's time to upgrade," said store manager Evan Meeks. "These are going to be, I think, the nicest studio rooms in the area."

He estimated the project will be finished by the end of December.

The new lesson space will comprise 450 square feet in total, with two 7-by-7-foot, sound-proof rooms and a small waiting area.

Rosewood offers guitar lessons from beginner to master levels, and hiring additional teachers will open about eight new student slots every day.

Other renovations have included replacing the main level ceiling and refinishing the building's original hardwood floors. The pipe break occurred on the upstairs level, causing damage and subsequent renovations on all levels.

Rosewood Music has been in business for about 15 years and, in addition to guitar lessons, offers sales and repairs of guitars, other musical instruments and amplifiers.
