COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Opponents of three new ordinances limiting the sales and use of tobacco and e-cigarettes have launched a petition drive to erase the new laws.
The Columbia Daily Tribune (http://bit.ly/1AP6S3V) reports the measures approved by the City Council on Monday increased the minimum sale age of tobacco and e-cigarettes to 21 and added e-cigarettes to the city's indoor smoking ban.
Petitioners have until Jan 5 to collect the signatures of 3,209 registered to force the council to reconsider or put the matter before voters. Petition organizer Spenser Pearson says meeting the minimum threshold would be a challenge, given the time of year.
Columbia is the only Missouri city that prohibits sales of tobacco products to customers younger than 21.
