Missouri man gets 35 years for killing relative

SIKESTON, Mo. (AP) - A southeast Missouri man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for driving into a crowd of his relatives at a family barbecue, killing a man and injuring five others.

The Sikeston Standard Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/1z0jMcX) 27-year-old Joseph Thornton was sentenced after pleading guilty in the death of Jeremy Johnson and assaults on others.

Police say Thornton became upset after he was asked to leave the April 2013 gathering.

Three children were injured. Only Johnson died in the attack.
