The Calvary Lutheran Lady Lions had struggled with scoring in their first five games of the year.
On Monday night, not so much.
The Lady Lions had three players in double figures and forced a running clock for the first time this season in a 59-25 defeat of Belle.
"I was impressed that they played together like a team," coach Jonathan Kueck said. "It wasn't just one girl controlling the whole game."
Becca Thompson scored 21 points, Brooke Rollins scored 15, and Sam Gunn had a double-double with 12 points and 20 rebounds.
Thompson started off slow, missing her first nine field goal attempts, but she remained a steady scoring threat down the stretch.
"She's a great asset to the team," Kueck said. "She's a great leader. She's very coachable, too. She's come a long way from just last year and from the beginning of the season as well."
Maci Steen and Lizzie Oxley each earned two quick fouls to start the first quarter.
"They want that ball, and that's what I coach them to do," Kueck said, "and they were a little bit too aggressive."
The Lady Lions found a groove in the second quarter, shooting 7-of-18 from the field to bring a 29-12 lead into the half.
"It's always nice to play at home," Kueck said. "Of course, everybody says that, but it is. It's true. They get comfortable, and the shots were falling."
At half, however, Kueck told his team to focus on getting the ball in the paint instead of relying on jump shots. Gunn was a force inside, using her 6-foot-1 frame to her advantage.
"Sam has stepped up, and that's what we wanted from her," Kueck said.
For Belle, all the offense came through Lacey Clark, who led all scorers with 23 points.
"I've coached against her for four years, and I know that she's a good player," Kueck said. "I knew that was going to be our game plan. We were practicing for her, to make sure and shut her down."
Though Clark scored all but two of the Lady Tigers' points, she shot just 8-of-33 from the field, including 3-18 from 3-point range, and eventually fouled out. The Lady Lions used a box-and-one formation on her, and Kueck felt it went well.
Three players with double-digit scoring totals is a season high for Calvary Lutheran.
The Lady Lions (2-4) host Higbee on Friday.
