Speed limit proposed for Mission Drive

A recommendation has been made to set the speed limit on Mission Drive, but drivers may have noticed speed limit signs already posted.

At the Jefferson City Transportation and Traffic meeting Wednesday, Operations Division Director Britt Smith said after completing the Mission Drive project, which is where the new St. Mary's Health Center is located, the city put up speed limit signs marking a 40 miles per hour limit. He said recently, staff realized an ordinance was never drafted or approved to establish that speed limit.

Also approved Wednesday was a request to extend the no-parking zone on Jefferson Street, near Fillmore Drive, by 70 feet. The request, brought by Tyler Sammons, is meant to help improve the sight distance for drivers coming on to Jefferson Street from Fillmore Drive, where the crest of a hill often blocks oncoming traffic from view.

"It's pretty frightening," Sammons said.

The commission also approved a new stop sign on Yorktown Drive before entering Rolling Hills Road, which was extended to connect with Mission Drive.

The final item discussed and approved by the commission was a request from city staff to remove parking on a portion of the south side of the 400 block of East Dunklin Street. Smith said, with the addition of a new crosswalk in front of the Employment Security building, staff noted removing the two remaining street parking spots between the crosswalk and Jackson Street would improve the sight distance for drivers in the area.

Although not part of the original request, the commission also included removing a third parking spot to the west of the crosswalk to ensure pedestrians stepping into the crosswalk are seen by oncoming vehicles.

All commission recommendations will be reviewed by the full City Council.
