NAACP Rally to be inside Capitol

The NAACP's "Journey for Justice" march to Jefferson City apparently is moving a little faster than expected, and should reach the Capitol about 1 p.m.

The original plan was for a 3 p.m. rally outside the Capitol.

But Rod Chapel, president of the local NAACP Branch, said the rally now will be held inside the Rotunda, because of the rain - and could begin about 1 or 1:15 p.m.

However, he said, the march route hasn't changed.

The march still will enter Jefferson City on U.S. 50/63, turn right at Monroe Street and head north to East Capitol Avenue, then west - past the Governor's Mansion - to the Capitol for the rally.

Although Gov. Jay Nixon plans to be in Joplin this afternoon while the rally is going on, his office announced this morning that former state Sen. Maida Coleman, D-St. Louis, will address the rally on the governor's behalf.

Nixon recently named her as director of his new Office of Community Engagement.

The governor's news release also noted he met Wednesday night with national NAACP President Cornell Brooks and other national and state NAACP leaders.

The meeting was held in Nixon's Capitol office, and also included key members of his administration, including state Public Safety Director Dan Isom, Coleman and Marvin Teer, a Lincoln University Curator, former St. Louis judge and part of the Community Engagement office.
