Downtown Association honors volunteers

The Downtown Association awarded this year's volunteer awards to two Jefferson City individuals and a business.

The Downtown Volunteer of the Year award was given to Chuck Walker.

Walker, along with Capt. Bob Clark, founded the Jefferson City Police Department's Community Action Team. This is a group of police officers involved in community events and activities.

Walker became involved in the Downtown Association through the Community Action Team and helped establish a working relationship between the Downtown Association and the Police Department.

Business of the Year was awarded to River City Florist & Gifts.

The business keeps the downtown looking beautiful but adds to the vibrancy of downtown through its contributions, the award noted. The Downtown Association always counts on River City to participate in retail promotions and events. The owner, Mike Moscato, opened his home this year for the Hidden Spaces tours and made significant investments to his property with a facade improvement and the addition of solar panels.

Steve Duncan, WAVCO Construction, received the Sam B. Cook award, given to an outstanding individual or business outside the Downtown Association.

Duncan does most of the historic preservation work for a local construction company, and through his extensive work in renovation and improvement, he has helped rebuild the charm of the downtown area.
