Versailles looks to build off victory

Against Fulton

The Versailles Tigers shut out Knob Noster last week 26-0, marking their first varsity football victory since Oct. 5, 2012, and the first under head coach Broc Silvers as he begins his second year.

Versailles will face off against Fulton, a team coming off a loss to the School of the Osage Indians.

Versailles meanwhile didn't have their intended starting QB in the backfield. Sophomore Sean Varner sat on the sidelines this week due to a violation of team rules, and last year's starter, tight end Michael Allen, took over at the position.

Varner should play against the Hornets though, while giving Allen time in his preferred spot as well.

Varner brings more options to the Versailles offense as well, especially with his keen eye for reading defenses. With his smarts and Silvers' trust in him, he can revert to audible when necessary. He also has a more accurate arm. Senior wide receivers Raine Ryerson and Ty Burkhart should see plenty of passes today.

Johnathan Cunningham will provide a lot of offense on his own for the Tigers. The running back has speed, is elusive and if he finds a defensive backfield, he'll have a strong shot of getting into the end zone. Osage had little problem doing this against Fulton's defense, which emphasized an over-aggressive pass rush that continually came back to bite them.

If Versailles could start the season 2-0, it will go a long way to building their confidence against what should be a rugged schedule in their last seven games.
