A first-grade teacher at Lawson Elementary School has been recognized by the Jefferson City football team for her work in the school district.

Each year, Jefferson City senior football players nominate their grade school teachers who made a difference in their lives and present the person with tickets to a home game.

Recently, senior football player Brendan Baker nominated Shelley Newman for the award.

When presenting the tickets to her, Baker explained his reason for nominating Newman: "Mrs. Newman always had time to talk Cardinal baseball with me, which kept me interested in school. Mrs. Newman has taught three of my siblings, and she is still very special to me and my family."
