Boater dies from injuries sustained in wreck at Shootout

The founder and throttleman for Outerlimits Offshore Powerboat Company died Tuesday from injuries he sustained during a powerboat accident at Lake of the Ozarks Shootout on Saturday.

Mike Fiore, 44, of Bristol, Rhode Island, developed complications from surgery and died Tuesday at University Hospital in Columbia, according to a statement released on the Outerlimits Offshore Powerboat Company's Facebook page.

According to the Missouri State Water Patrol Division's report, Joel Begin, 47, of Valley Field, Quebec, was driving the 42-foot SC Outerlimits catamaran with Fiore in an early run Saturday on the Lake of the Ozarks course near the 34-mile marker of the main channel, which is by Captain Ron's in Sunrise Beach.

At 10:34 a.m., Begin lost control of the powerboat due to wind interference, causing the vessel to become airborne and overturn twice before re-entering the water bow first and coming to a rest end-over-end on the water, according to the Water Patrol report.

Shootout rescue crews extracted Fiore and Begin from the powerboat. Lake West Ambulance transported Begin to Lake Regional Hospital, and air ambulance transported Fiore to University Hospital.

"The entire Outerlimits family is devastated by the loss of our friend and leader of our company. Mike's love for high speed boating was only outmatched by the love for his wife, three young children and his family," said Frank Sciacca, general counsel of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboat Company, in a statement.

"Details on arrangements will be made and released in the coming days, and in the meantime we hope all understand the family's need to grieve for their loss privately."
