Your Opinion: Let facts, not political correctness, prevail

Dear Editor:

The headline in the paper was, "New fear: What happens in Ferguson if no charges?" I thought the article referred to those who have already been arrested for crimes, as well as those not yet arrested for theft, assaults on police officers, breaking and entering, illegal discharge of weapons, etc; instead the article described what liberal/progressives, and our governor, will use as a "politically correct" basis for pushing to indict Officer Wilson, evidence be damned.

I believe in our right to free speech. No one should have interfered with any lawful assembly of protesters. I am unaware of any such action occurring. If protesters did break the law by not following the rules of any permits necessary for parades/assemblies then the police had a duty to respond. (If a group of neo-Nazis decided to walk through Jefferson City, in violation of city/state laws, would you not expect the police to take action?)

When protesters started breaking and entering and looting it should have been the duty of the police to take the action necessary to protect the property of those being robbed. Sadly, politically correct politicians prevented the police from doing so. For anyone except the most rabid anti-gunner, every day it becomes clearer that we need to be able to protect our families and property; the police may not be allowed to do so.

I should not have been surprised by the content of the article. Political correctness will probably prevent the judicial system from even charging those already arrested. If they are charged the most they will get will be a slight slap on the wrist. Will we see follow-up articles on the fate of those from whom illegal guns were confiscated (they must have been illegal or the police would have had no basis for the confiscation)? Will we see follow-up articles on the arrest, charging and convictions of those doing the breaking and entering and looting? Based on past history, "political correctness" will probably prevent any of this from happening.

There may be enough evidence for the grand jury to indict Officer Wilson. If he is indicted it should be on the basis of the evidence, not because of political correctness nor a fear of further looting and lawlessness.

Factoid - people have donated over $300,000 to aide Officer Wilson.
