Your Opinion: Padlock trend turns tacky

Dear Editor:

I'd like to ring in and speak a bit on the growing number of padlocks being put on the pedestrian/bike attachment of the Missouri River Bridge. Yes, I do realize where this kind of thing originates, what they are there for, and the reasons why.

I'll admit, this all started out to be a pretty interesting trend at first. But it in my personal opinion, this mess has gotten totally out of hand and has turned the bridge and its appearance into a real trashy looking inner-city graffiti scene. Quite simply, it's an eyesore and looks both awful and tacky.

This is Jefferson City, and the Missouri River, and a high traffic route, not some romantic storybook scene with a bridge over a small stream in Paris, France. This practice really does need to be addressed and dealt with by our officials. To say the very least, the out-of-state tourists deserve to see an untainted view of our city and the river when they approach it.

Do we want their memories of traveling through Jefferson City to be that of a run down junk yard, or of a nice well maintained bridge without a big mess of junk scrap iron littering on it?
