Garden Club plans another "Blue Star' memorial

To be unveiled at McClung Park

A new "Blue Star Memorial" will be unveiled at McClung Park next Sunday, by Jefferson City's Bittersweet Garden Club.

Blue Star Memorials long have been associated with highways across the United States.

But their main goal is recognizing members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have defended the United States of America.

The National Council of State Garden Clubs (now known as National Garden Clubs Inc., based in St. Louis) started the program in 1945, after the end of World War II - but noted on its website that the program really began "with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II."

After focusing first on the highways, the national group said, "The program was expanded to include all men and women who had served, were serving or would serve in the armed services of the United States.

"Memorial Markers and By-Way markers were added to the Highway Markers, to be used at locations such as National cemeteries, parks, veteran's facilities and gardens."

Bittersweet Garden Club's new memorial will be dedicated at 4 p.m. next Sunday, as part of a memorial garden developed in memory of Bonnie Mae Dunlap and her parents, who lived on Vineyard Square.

The garden is part of a gift made to Jefferson City from Bonnie Mae's estate.

Promotional material about next week's event said: "We have chosen the Blue Star Memorial as a part of the garden since Bonnie Mae and her mother, India, were life long members of Federated Garden Clubs.

"Federated is the sponsor of the Blue Star Memorials across the United States."

At the same time as the new Blue Star Memorial dedication, the Historic City of Jefferson will be hosting a special event at the park recognizing the designation of the Historic Moreau District.

There will be an ice cream social, music, displays and other things at that event, which will run from 4-7:30 p.m.

"It should be a very fun-filled evening," the Bittersweet Garden Club said in its promotional material.
