Jefferson City area athletes place at nationals

Strayhorn, Muhammad earn medals

DES MOINES - Two members of the Capitol Area Track Club earned All-American honors by placing in the top eight nationally at the AAU Junior Olympics on July 30-31.

Kiara Strayhorn placed fourth in the 10-year-old girls long jump with a personal best of 13 feet, 9 inches.

A'tiq Muhammad placed fourth in the 11-year-old boys age group with a jump of 15 feet, 10 3/4 inches and fifth in his age group in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.54.

The students will be recognized Saturday at the President's Mansion at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

Four Capitol Area Track Club members qualified for the event.

Strayhorn also competed at the North American final of the Hershey's Track and Field Games on Aug. 2 in Hershey, Pa. She finished third in the standing long jump with a jump of 6-7 1/2. Strayhorn had to win events at the state and provincial levels to advance to the final, which features athletes from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Strayhorn's sisters, Kalie and Kloey, also competed at the AAU Junior Olympics.
