Holts Summit to hold public hearing on trash service

On Monday, Holts Summit residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinions about proposed amendments to their trash service.

The potential amendments include an optional recycling service, mandatory residential cart service and a five-year-contract renewal with Allied Waste Services. Holts Summit has used Allied Waste Services since the 1990s.

The Holts Summit Board of Aldermen is holding a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday at the Board of Aldermen Meeting Room. City Administrator Brian Crane said the public hearing is the board's opportunity to hear residents' feedback on the potential changes to Holts Summit's trash service. This is the second public hearing regarding changes to the trash service, the first one was at the board's May meeting.

Crane said Holts Summit has had problems with illegal dumping because not every residence is required to have a trash cart. Crane said the proposed changes to the trash service would make Holts Summit's trash program more similar to trash pickup in the communities surrounding it.

"This is a way for the city to take over the billing, require carts - like most other towns around us and keep the rates the same for the customers," Crane said.

The meeting agenda includes a request to table the second and third final reading of Bill No. 2014-057, the ordinance authorizing the mayor to renew Allied Waste Services' contract. Gwendolyn Edmonson, Holts Summit city clerk, said they may wait to make a final decision regarding the trash service amendments bill. Once the board passes the bill, the city can work on implementation of the changes.
