Strategic planning on docket for upcoming school board meetings

The Jefferson City Board of Education has two upcoming meetings scheduled.

A board work session is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Dix Education Center at 204 Dix Road.

Topics to be discussed at the special open meeting include:

• Strategic planning for the school district.

• Issues related to student behavior and discipline.

• "School climate," or the status of quality of life in the school buildings.

The agenda for Sunday's session does not include a formal opportunity for the public to speak.

On Monday the board will convene two hours earlier than normal for a tax rate hearing and its regular meeting. That meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday at the board's offices, 315 E. Dunklin St.

Monday's agenda includes a motion to suspend the open meeting and enter into a closes session for reasons related to litigation or legal actions; hiring and firing of employees; or dealing with records that are protected from disclosure by law.

The meeting will also serve as a time for the board to consider and approve the district's 2014-15 tax rate.

Human Resources Director Penny Rector is expected to deliver a update on information gleaned from exit surveys by staff who left the district at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

And, because the board is expected to hear a report from Superintendent Brian Mitchell about "strategic planning, discipline/behavior and school climate," the public will have an opportunity weigh in on those topics at Monday's meeting.

The board has a policy that only items from the posted agenda may be discussed. That same policy also allows the board to establish time limits for public comment and prevents any one individual from speaking more than once.
