Your Opinion: Wary of ballot wording

Dear Editor:

Has everyone read the proposed changes to the Missouri Constitutional Amendment 5 published in the July 17 News Tribune?

This is the wording for Section 23 of the Missouri Constitution, Article 1 of the Bill of Rights, "That the right of every citizen to keep and bear arms in defense of his home, person and property, or when lawfully summoned in and of the civil power, shall not be questioned, but this shall not justify the wearing of concealed weapons." The part being removed from this section of the amendment is: [but this shall not justify the wearing of concealed weapons.]

The Brooks v State decision said that the section did not prohibit the General Assembly from enacting statutes allowing or disallowing the carrying of concealed weapons. Hence the Conceal and Carry statute which was used to override our no vote on conceal and carry several years ago. So why is the General Assembly presenting an amendment now to remove the words that were in question? So it can never be challenged again?

If you are a voter you really should take the time and effort to read and understand the amendments our General Assembly is asking us to change or add to our very important Constitution. Once we allow them to take the words out of the Constitution you will never be able to put them back in.
