LU wins four races at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Lincoln men's and women's track and field teams combined to win four races and post 10 top-two finishes at the Drake Relays this weekend.

The Blue Tiger women claimed three victories, sweeping the 4x100-, 4x400- and 4x800-meter relays.

The foursome of Judith Riley, Yanique Ellington, Kimberly Bailey and Janae Johnson won the 4x100 in 45.59.

Willomena Williams, Jhevere Hall, Tamara Keane and Donna-Lee Hylton won the 4x400 in 3:37.77, while Williams, Hall, Ebony Rose and Monique Thompson won the 4x800 in 8:52.53.

Ellington and Johnson later teamed with Keane and Hylton in the 4x200, with the foursome finishing as the runners-up with a time of 1:36.29.

Lincoln also posted three other second-place results, including in the distance medley, where the group of Hall, Williams, Thompson and Marcia Harrison clocked in at 11:37.28.

Thompson and Williams also helped the 1,600-meter sprint medley team to a second-place finish, joining Keane and Johhnson to finish with a time of 3:54.15.

The other second-place finish came in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle preliminaries as Shakeisha Miller, Juneille Barker, Nadia Harriott and Ladonna Richards finished in 55.64. The foursome did not finish in the finals.

The Lincoln men also had three top-two results, with the highlight of the meet coming in the preliminaries of the 4x100-meter relay. The foursome of Wesley Best, Romel Lewis, Romone Hill and Michael Ashley won the prelims with a time of 40.73, but the group did not end up finishing in the finals.

Best, Hill, Ashley and Khorey Spalding took second in the 4x200-meter relay, clocking in at 1:26.16. The Blue Tigers also turned in a second-place result in the 1,600-meter sprint medley, as Best, Hill, Jermaine Blake and Neville Daley combined to finish in 3:24.81.

Lincoln had two other notable results, including Blake's third-place finish in the 800-meter run. Blake clocked in at 1:53.12 in that event and was also a part of the Blue Tigers' 4x400 meter relay team, which came in sixth after clocking in at 3:12.59.

Up next for both Blue Tigers squads is the 2014 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be hosted by Lincoln University. The three-day meet will be held at Dwight T. Reed Stadium this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
