Helias goes 2-0 on first day of Kirksville tourney

KIRKSVILLE - The Helias Crusaders went 2-0 on Friday to open play in the Kirksville Tournament.

The Crusaders scored seven runs in the final three innings to defeat the Kirksville Tigers 12-7 in the opener.

Helias led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the third before Kirksville scored six times to take the lead. But the Crusader scored twice in the fifth, once in the sixth and four times in the seventh to get the win.

Austin Sachse and Chase Bexten had three hits each in a 13-hit Helias attack. Todd Buschjost, Brock Gerstner and Hayden Lee added two hits each. Sachse also drove in three runs, while Gerstner had three runs scored and two RBI.

Clayton Winter got the win in relief. He pitched the final 41/3 innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five.

In the nightcap, Garrett Buschjost doubled home Bexten in the eighth inning to give Helias a 4-3 victory against Warrenton.

Alex Barton, Sachse and Lee had two hits each in a 10-hit Helias attack. Alex Faddoul had a two-run home run.

Todd Buschjost was the winner in relief in his first pitching appearance of the season. He allowed one run on one hit and two walks in three innings while striking out five. Sachse pitched the first five innings, giving up two unearned runs on seven hits and a walk to go along with five strikeouts.

Helias (11-6) is back in tournament action against Battle at 12:30 p.m. today.
