Our Opinion: Volunteers invited to serve

Serve Jeff City, true to its name, is inviting volunteers to serve Jefferson City.

On Saturday, the group again will host a day of service throughout the community. Volunteers will gather for a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in Memorial Park. At 9 a.m., they will divide into projects teams and travel to 15 project sites.

Projects still in need of volunteers include:

• Cleanup of Wears Creek.

• Cleanup, along with some mulching and planting, in the downtown area and along the Greenway on Edgewood Drive.

• Gardening at the offices of the United Way, Salvation Army, Dreams to Reality and Special Learning Center.

• Mulching and landscaping on the Lincoln University campus.

Sufficient volunteers have signed up for a range of other projects at specified city parks and agency headquarters.

Saturday will mark the third year for the volunteer project, which has attracted more than 300 volunteers in each of its previous episodes. Serve Jeff City began in 2012 as a partnership among the United Way of Central Missouri, Jefferson City Parks and Recreation and Jefferson City YMCA.

Additional information and a sign-up sheet to volunteer may be found at www.ServeJeffCity.org

"We welcome all volunteers and we're excited about this opportunity to make an impact on the community," said Ken Hussey, community relations director for the YMCA.

The day of service is about much more than volunteer cleanup and beautification efforts.

It is about fellowship and engagement in the community. It is about working with others to achieve a shared purpose.

If service is its own reward, we encourage people to reward themselves on Saturday.
