Lincoln ties for third at golf tourney

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Brian Lillevold tied for sixth overall, leading the Lincoln Blue Tigers to a tie for third place at the 2014 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championship on Wednesday.
Lincoln finished a team score of 902 at the three-day tournament, played at the Alvamar Golf Club.
Central Missouri earned top honors, finishing first with 867, while Northeastern State finished second with 883. Central Oklahoma tied with Lincoln for third, while Lindenwood and Washburn tied for fifth at 905.
Lillevold saved his best round for last, shooting a one-under 71 to earn a final score of 220. The senior opened the tournament with a 74 on Monday and carded a 75 on Tuesday, before closing with the second-best final round score of the field’s 60 golfers.
Steven Mallow had the second-best score for Lincoln at 229, placing him in a tie for 27th. Mallow shot a 72 on Monday before carding a 75 on Tuesday and an 82 in the third round.
Austin Wheeler was just one stroke behind, finishing with a 230 to tie for 29th. The sophomore opened the tournament with a 74 before shooting scores of 77 and 79 over the final two rounds.
Nick Goeke and Blake Lammers both shot a 233, putting them in a tie for 34th.
Goeke opened and closed the tournament with rounds of 80, and carded a 73 on Tuesday. Lammers rebounded from a first-round of 84 to card a 72 on Tuesday before closing with a 77.
The MIAA Championship marked just the first of two postseason tournaments for Lincoln. The Blue Tigers will try to defend their 2013 PGA Minority Collegiate Championship title at Ryder Course at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla. from May 8-11.
