Lincoln baseball falls to 1-34

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Lincoln baseball team managed just nine hits in 16 innings of play Friday and dropped both halves of a doubleheader with the Washburn Ichabods.

Washburn is now 20-19 overall and 19-15 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Lincoln is 1-34 overall and still looking for its first conference win at 0-30.

In a seven-inning contest to start the day, Lincoln produced just three hits and lost 6-1.

The Blue Tigers actually got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first. Gatlin Wiggans had a one-out single and he moved to second on a single by Ben Stewart. After Josh Kennedy reached on a fielder's choice that sent Wiggans to third, he scored on a wild pitch.

But the only other hit for the Blue Tigers was a single by Josh Kennedy in the fourth inning, and no Lincoln player reached second base after the first inning.

Washburn got one run in the second to tie it and won it with five runs in the fifth.

Ryan Simpson (0-7) was the losing pitcher, working the first four innings. He gave up four earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out one.

Joshua Register followed and gave up two earned runs on two hits and two walks in one inning. John Bisges pitched the final frame and gave up one hit and one walk.

Lincoln then got outhit just 8-6 in the nine-inning nightcap, but couldn't score in a 3-0 loss.

The Blue Tigers, who stranded eight runners in the game, had their best chance to score in the third inning when they loaded the bases with one out. But two strikeouts - the first looking and the second swinging - ended the threat.

Washburn won it with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Kaleb Davis had a double for Lincoln's only extra-base hit of the game, as the other five hits were singles. No Blue Tiger had multiple hits.

Nathan Lueckenhoff (0-8) was the tough-luck loser, as he threw a complete-game eight-hitter. Only two of the three runs were earned, and he walked three and struck out one.

The teams will wrap up their series with a doubleheader starting at noon today.
