Man charged with killing cat

A Jefferson City man has been charged with misdemeanor animal abuse for killing another man's cat.

Court documents show Roger Eveler, 52, of 1120 Cordell St., is believed to have killed the cat on March 30.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows Eveler admitted to shooting the cat.

The owner of the cat, James Nilges Jr., came to Eveler's residence and assaulted him by hitting and kicking him on his face and body. Nilges was arrested and charged for the assault.

Eveler said he shot the cat because there are lots of loose animals in his neighborhood and he didn't see any collar on the cat. He said there had not been any property damage done by the cat and it wasn't causing him any problems.

The cat was shot once in the head with a pellet gun.
