Lincoln softball falls to Missouri Western

Sam Kircher and Kelsey Hight each hit home runs, but Missouri Western swept a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader against Lincoln on Saturday.

The Griffons won the opener 8-1, before rolling to a 12-2 win in five innings in Game 2.

Kircher was 3-for-7 with an RBI and scored two runs on the day to lead Lincoln (3-34, 0-22). The junior now hitting .363 on the season and has hit nine home runs.

Both Kircher and Hight scored in the nightcap, with both runs coming in the bottom of the fifth.

Hight got the Blue Tigers on the board with a solo home run, her first of the season, to ruin Missouri Western's shutout. Two at-bats later it was Kircher's turn to shine, as shortstop hit a stand-up triple to right-center.

Shantae Duren and Allyson Corry added two hit apiece on the day, while Erin Sommerer and Kassidey Borland each chipped in with one.

Alyssa Laudwig allowed four runs on nine hits, while striking out one in five innings in the opener. Jessica Cook finished the game, allowing four runs on six hits while walking one in two innings.

Cook came into pitch the final 3 1/3 innings in Game 2, yielding three earned runs on eight hits while striking out four.

The Griffons (31-15, 14-8) outhit Lincoln 28-10 on the day.

On Friday, Lincoln combined for 22 hits, but the Blue Tigers fell to Missouri Western in a twinbill, 8-2, 10-5.

The Blue Tigers will take a break from MIAA play on Friday for their final two non-league games of the season. Lincoln will host Lindenwood-Belleville on at 1 p.m. Friday for a doubleheader.
