Habitat for Humanity celebrating 20th anniversary

5K, variety of activities planned today

River City Habitat for Humanity is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the sale of its first home today with a 5K fun run/walk, lunch, games and a magic show at Jefferson City's North Pavilion, 927 Fourth St.

"It's a lot to celebrate because we've now sold 83 houses here," said Kelly Smith, executive director of River City Habitat for Humanity. "We've had a big impact, so I think it's something to be celebrated for our community."

She said Habitat picked the location of the fun run/walk because "when the flood happened in 1993, it was sort of a catalyst for the big 10-house blitz build that gave our Habitat affiliate our big start."

"Kind of in honor and memory of that event, we wanted to host our anniversary thing over the river in the bottoms area," Smith said.

The cost of the fun run/walk is $25 for ages 13 and older and free for ages 12 and under. The $25 participants receive a free t-shirt and 12 and under receive a Habitat medal made by children at the HALO Learning Center.

Smith said the event is a partnership with HALO.

Registration for the event is from 9-10:15 a.m. and the run/walk begins at 10:30 a.m.

Following the run, a free lunch - courtesy of Hy-Vee - will be served. There will also be face painting, fire truck tours, art projects and games for the kids.

There will be live music at 11:30 a.m. and David Gillam's Illusion Show, Crazy Cool Magic, at noon.

Runners may register at the event.
