Macks Creek man drowns in Little Niangua River

A medical condition is being blamed for the death of a Macks Creek man who drowned after falling into the Little Niangua River near the state Route J Bridge in Camden County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45-year-old Steven D. Owens, Macks Creek, apparently fell from a aluminum canoe while fishing on the Little Niangua last Wednesday, April 9.

His body was discovered floating face down in the stream by a passing fisherman who notified local authorities about 5:44 p.m. Troopers removed the victim was removed from the water a short time after they arrived on the scene. Owens "s body was transported to Hedges Funeral Home in Camdenton.

This was the first drowning during the month for the month of April and the third in the state for 2014. The last fatal boating accident and/or drowning in the Lake of the Ozarks area was recorded in September 2013.
