Incumbent 4th Ward Councilwoman Carrie Tergin talks with supporters Tuesday evening during her election results watch party at Cork downtown. Tergin lost her bid for reelection to Glen Costales.

Jefferson City's 4th Ward has a new representative.

Glen Costales beat incumbent Carrie Tergin for a seat on the City Council by only 47 votes. Tergin, who has served on the council for six years, was seeking her last term on the council. Costales received 52.14 percent, or 537 votes, while Tergin received 47.57 percent, or 490 votes.

Costales said he wanted to thank Tergin for her years on the council and service to the city.

"I wish her the best in her personal and business endeavors," Costales said.

Costales said he was very grateful to the residents of the 4th Ward and to all in the city who took the time to vote Tuesday. Costales said he spent weeks going door-to-door campaigning and sent out campaign postcards with handwritten notes addressed individually to 4th Ward residents.

"I've put a lot of work into this," Costales said.

Tergin said she's worked hard for the city the past six years and has no regrets about her time on the council.

"I'm proud of what I've done over the last six years," Tergin said. "I've given it my all. I've put my heart into this. I've given the city myself for the last six years ... I always stood up for what I believed in ... and if the community doesn't appreciate that and doesn't want that any longer, then they need to move in another direction."

She said she has always stood for progress, and there were two clear choices on the ballot.

"The choice for progress and moving forward is Carrie Tergin. The citizens chose another way," Tergin said. "I've given what I have."

Tergin said she's unsure about whether she'll seek elected office again, noting she didn't plan on it before she ran six years ago.
