4 charged in theft of storage center

Four people have been charged in connection with stolen property cases in the Apache Flats area.

Brian Barrett, 42, Carrie Haslag, 32, Thomas Benton, 42, and Anthony Weathers, 36, who all live in the 5100 and 5400 blocks of Business 50 West, are each charged with one count of receiving stolen property. As of Tuesday afternoon, all four were being held in the Cole County Jail.

Court documents show that on April 3 authorities were called to Apache U-Store, 602 Geld St., where multiple calls over the past few months had been received by the Cole County Sheriff’s Department of thefts from storage units and property managers now had suspects on video.

The video showed individuals stealing security cameras and going into storage units.

A unit rented by Weathers was searched, and cameras were found inside.

Authorities later towed a vehicle from in front of Weather’s residence with more security cameras in the back seat. The vehicle was owned by Weather’s brother, Benton. Haslag is Benton’s girlfriend; she told authorities that “everything that’s his is hers and vice versa.”

Managers said Weathers was often seen with Barrett and that Barrett hadn’t paid rent on his unit for more than three months.

The managers allowed authorities to look in Barrett’s unit where they found two propane gas cylinders along with materials used for barbecues by the Marine Corps League. Multiple PEZ dispensers were also found in the unit, valued at $2,000.
