Lincoln falls to late rally

In baseball to Truman State

KIRKSVILLE - The Lincoln baseball team appeared poised to win its second game of the season, but the Blue Tigers fell victim to a late rally and lost 8-7 to Truman State on Tuesday.

After the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the third, the Blue Tigers exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth. Josh Kennedy's three-run home run was the big blow, while Zach Roberts added a two-run single in the stanza.

The lead disintegrated after the Bulldogs had a run in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth to tie it at 6.

But the Blue Tigers got a run in the top of the seventh to pull back ahead, as Craig Jones' single scored Ben Stewart to make it 7-6. However, Truman got the winning runs in the bottom of that inning on three hits and one walk.

Stewart was the only Blue Tiger with multiple hits, as he had a pair of singles as Lincoln got outhit 13-9.

Zach York (0-5) took the loss in relief of Gatlin Wiggans. Wiggans pitched the first four innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and four walk, while York gave up five earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two in three innings.

Ian Fuemmeler finished up, allowing just one hit in a scoreless inning of work.

Lincoln is now 1-28 on the season, while Truman State moved to 13-17.

The Blue Tigers return to action this weekend at Emporia State.

The teams will play one game Friday, a doubleheader Saturday and one game Sunday.
