Your Opinion: Council urged to reject both proposals

Dear Editor:

Mr. Stallman's recent letter was on point regarding other than hotel users' taxes funding this boondoggle.

We have voiced our opinions to council members, attended public meetings doing the same and have written both councils members and the mayor of this and other issues trying to make them understand our opinions of what city government should do - protect and serve. It is not the city's responsibility to "grow the city."

Sunday's lead articles seemed to voice council members leaning toward rejecting both proposals. Let us hope this is true and that the insanity of supporting a non-sustainable operation will be rejected and common sense, stewardship and proper use of our taxes will prevail. If a conference center needs to be here, it would have already been accomplished by someone taking a risk with private funds believing his return would be rewarded.

Should a conference center ever be constructed here in Jefferson City with public funds, every state agency should be required by law to hold all conferences at the site - period. No more Lake Ozark, Branson Kansas City or St. Louis meetings. Only then could the convention center have a viable chance of sustaining itself.
