JC man charged with assault with knife

As of Tuesday afternoon, a Jefferson City man was being held on $250,000 bond in the Cole County Jail after being charged in an assault that occurred Monday.

Joe Stevens, 27, was charged with second-degree domestic assault, second-degree felony assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows the assaults occurred at two locations, in the 300 block of Ashley Street and 700 block of Madison Street.

The woman told police she had been choked, hit, kicked and had her head slammed into a wall at a residence on Ashley. She had red marks on her left arm, the back of her neck and head, and on the right side of her throat.

Later, at a location on Madison Street, Stevens got in front of the woman while holding a folding knife next to her, with the blade open, and asked her, "Are you ready to die tonight?"

Stevens has a pending case against him from February 2013 where he was charged with first-degree rape and second-degree domestic assault.

Correction, posted April 3, 2014:

Based on information in a police probable cause statement, the News Tribune incorrectly reported in the original version of this story that Joe C. Stevens had been out of jail on a pre-trial release program when he was charged Tuesday with an assault that occurred Monday.

But a circuit court official said Wednesday that Stevens was not part of their pre-trial release program. And court records show Stevens was released from jail on Nov. 29, 2013, after winning a reduction in his bond to $25,000, and posting a surety bond for that amount.
