Girls Tennis: Lady Jays swept

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Jefferson City dropped a pair of matches to Edwardsville (Ill.) in the Edwardsville Invitational on Saturday.

The Lady Jays opened with a 4-3 loss to Edwardsville Black before falling 11-0 to Edwardsville Orange.

Against Black, singles winners for the Lady Jays were Eden Hoogveld (6-2, 6-1) and Delta Verslues (6-0, 1-6, 10-5 tiebreaker). Paige Smith (1-6, 0-6) and Crystal Pfenenger (4-6, 0-6) fell.

Erica Overfelt and Esther Ruboneka won 6-0, 6-1 in doubles, while Kelly Raithel and Haley Snellen (2-6, 2-6) and Madeline Brown and Athira Nambiar (4-6, 0-6) lost.

Against Orange, singles losers for the Lady Jays were Raithel (3-6, 2-6), Smith (1-6, 3-6), Hoogveld (3-6, 0-6), Nambiar (2-6, 4-6) Brown (1-6, 1-6) and Allie Lewis (2-6, 0-6). Doubles losers were Smith and Hoogveld (1-6, 2-6), Raithel and Snellen (1-6, 2-6), Nambiar and Brown (1-6, 2-6), Overfelt and Ruboneka (1-6, 3-6) and Victoria Brainerd and Pfenenger (2-6, 0-6).

Jefferson City (12-4) is back in action Tuesday against Marshall on Senior Night.
