Tennis: Lady Jays split

O'FALLON, Ill. - Jefferson City split a pair of matches with O'Fallon (Ill.) and Granite City (Ill.) on Friday.

The Lady Jays opened with a 5-4 loss to O'Fallon.

Kelly Raithel won her singles match 6-3, 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker) before Athira Nambiar (3-6, 2-6), Delta Verslues (0-6, 0-6) and Erica Overfelt (1-6, 1-6) dropped theirs.

Doubles winners for the Lady Jays were Eden Hoogveld and Paige Smith (6-0, 6-4) and Haley Snellen and Madeline Brown (6-2, 6-4). Crystal Pfenenger and Esther Ruboneka lost 2-6, 3-6.

Jefferson City rebounded with an 11-0 victory against Granite City.

Singles winners for the Lady Jays were Raithel (6-0, 6-0), Smith (6-0, 6-2), Hoogveld (6-0, 6-0), Nambiar (6-2, 6-1), Brown (6-1, 6-0) and Verslues (6-1, 6-0).

Doubles winners were Raithel and Snellen (6-2, 6-0), Nambiar and Brown (6-1, 6-0), Verslues and Pfenenger (6-1, 6-1), Overfelt and Ruboneka (6-1, 6-0) and in their first varsity action, Allie Lewis and Victoria Branderd (6-2, 6-2).

Jefferson City is back in action today at Edwardsville (Ill.).
