Fire hydrant struck in accident

A Jefferson City woman driving east on Industrial Drive ran off the road, down an embankment and struck a fire hydrant just before 11 a.m. Monday.

According to police department reports, Shannon Owens, 31, went off the road, returned to the road, overcorrected, lost control, and ran off a second time before striking the hydrant.

Owens only had a "bump on her head" according to officers and declined medical attention at the scene.

Missouri-American Water employees came to the scene to shut off the water about 12:20 p.m., which was shooting about 30 feet in the air near Missouri Vocational Enterprises (MVE).

At least two state vehicles in the MVE parking lot were damaged by gravel under the pavement that was shot into the air by the water.
