Helias tennis wins tournament

SEDALIA - Helias won the six-team Sedalia Smith-Cotton Invitational on Friday with 26.5 points. Hickman was second with 24 points.

Ashley Dowden won the singles tournament with a first-round bye, a 13-11 victory against Battle, a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Hickman and a title-winning 6-2, 6-1 match against another Hickman player.

Mary Conley came in fourth with a first-round bye, a win against Battle and losses to a pair of Hickman players.

Casey Clogston and Abbey Verslues won the doubles tournament with an 8-2 win against Hickman's No. 2, a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Smith-Cotton and a title-winning 6-1, 6-3 victory against Hickman's No. 1.

Becca Shelton and Lauren Highfill took sixth place.

Helias won a dual Thursday night at Fulton by a 7-0 margin. The match was cut short due to weather.

Singles winners were Dowden (10-2), Conley (10-4), Verslues (10-2) and Clogston (10-1).

Doubles winners were Dowden and Highfill (10-6), Conley and Verslues (10-2) and Shelton and Clogston (10-8).

Helias (8-1) plays in the Rolla doubles tournament today.
