With diligence, Old Munichburg continues to grow, in both community and business.
The 100 block of East Dunklin Street in Jefferson City has just one vacant building left, with Wilson's Yoga Studio beginning renovations to fill one of the last remaining buildings needing a tenant.
The neighborhood continues to use the recently revitalized area for festivals as well. The local Taste of Missouri was recently held on the popular block, and now the Old Munichburg Association is gearing up for its annual Oktoberfest set for Sept. 28.
Finding treasures at Carder's
Just around the corner and up the street, a new resale and eBay drop-off shop has taken up residence.
Owners Cari Ellis and Derek Moore opened Carder's Finds just three weeks ago. The owners, along with employee Katrina Lewis, have already seen a good response from the community. Offering a variety of household, antique and furniture items, Ellis said many customers are surprised at the low prices.
"We try to be reasonable, and pass on the prices that we get to our customers," Ellis noted.
The 711 Jefferson St. location acts as both a resale shop, featuring furniture and other househould items that Ellis and Moore purchased themselves, as well as an online consignment outlet.
Carder's Finds acts as the go-between for community members hoping to sell their stuff online.
They scope out the value of the items, and can give estimates as to how much certain items are selling for. Then as the items sell, Carder's takes a small percentage for their time researching, selling, packaging and shipping the sold items.
"The good thing about us, is, you don't have to make an appointment," Lewis explained.
When the doors are open, people can come in, or call, to get their items priced and listed on eBay.
"I have been doing eBay for over 10 years," Ellis said. "And I enjoy treasure hunting."
Putting their passion to work, Ellis and Moore are excited to bring a shop that can be affordable to a variety of customers. And to greet their visitors, Billee Bob, a Yellow-naped Amazon parrot hangs out in the corner, acting as the official Carder's mascot. The store is open from 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon-5 p.m. on Sundays. To reach Carder's Finds, call 573-416-0221.
New tavern slated for Old Munichburg property
Just down the road, in the previous Old Munichburg Tavern, a new owner is gearing up for his grand opening.
Hoxton Tavern and Grill is coming soon, entrepreneur Dino Cubilla said. The new restaurant is slated to open at the end of October.
Cubilla and his unnamed business partners have been investing in the 400 W. Elm St. property for nearly three months. Cubilla said the entire restaurant has been updated, including the electricity, bathrooms and patio. The previous patio included a bocce ball court which has now been removed. New equipment will adorn the newly remodeled kitchen and dining areas, and the space includes an area for dancing.
The new owners hope to bring in live country music, disc jockeys and host special Cardinal and patio nights. Cubilla said customers can look forward to eating the best pizza in town, Wing Wednesdays, as well as burgers, appetizers, and great specials on ribs and steaks.
Hoxton Tavern will be open for both lunch and dinner, featuring 20-25 beers on tap as well as bottles. Opening at 11 a.m., Cubilla said the Hoxton Tavern will serve dinner until 10 p.m., staying open until 1 a.m.
