HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Thierry Henry scored in the first half and Fabian Espindola added a goal on a wild play with 10 minutes left, leading the New York Red Bulls to a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday night.
The Red Bulls (14-9-6) took over sole possession of first place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings. New York, which has five games remaining, began the day tied with both Montreal and Sporting Kansas City, but the Impact lost to Columbus and Sporting was off.
Toronto (4-14-11) was eliminated from playoff contention.
The Red Bulls dominated play from the start and did not allow Toronto to get any scoring chances, as goalkeeper Luis Robles got his ninth shutout of the season. New York improved to 9-2-3 at home.
FIRE 3, REVOLUTION 2
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) - Alex scored the tiebreaking goal in the 86th minute and Sean Johnson made four saves to lead Chicago.
Three minutes after entering the game, Alex corralled a clearing pass and knocked a left-footed low shot off Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth from 24 yards out for his first goal of the season.
Juan Luis Anangono and Mike Magee also scored for Chicago (11-11-6), which pulled into a tie with Philadelphia for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 39 points - two points ahead of seventh-place New England.
Kelyn Rowe and Sare Sene twice gave the Revolution (10-11-7) leads, but the Fire tied the score both times - the last on Magee's goal in the 55th.
DYNAMO 1, UNION 0
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Ricardo Clark scored in the 53rd minute to lift Houston past Philadelphia.
The Dynamo (11-10-7) snapped a four-game winless streak and moved past Union (10-10-9) in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Philadelphia extended its winless streak to five matches, scoring just once in that stretch.
Clark flicked a header off a free kick from Brad Davis for his third goal of the season. Tally Hall got his seventh shutout of the season without having to make a save.
The Union had a goal nullified in the 30th minute when Amobi Okugo was called for being offsides.
D.C. UNITED 2, GALAXY 2
WASHINGTON (AP) - Substitute Kyle Porter scored in the 84th minute to help D.C. United pull into a draw with Los Angeles.
Porter's goal came three minutes after Michael Stephens scored for the first time in three seasons to put Los Angeles in front.
Robbie Keane also scored his team-leading 13th goal early for the Galaxy (13-10-5) and added his team-leading 11th assist on Stephens' effort, while Chris Pontius tied it for United with a late first-half goal in his first start since July.
Porter's header gave league-worst United just its second point in six matches. However, D.C. (3-19-6) now has a win and two draws in its last three home contests.
CREW 2, IMPACT 1
MONTREAL (AP) - Chad Marshall and Dominic Oduro scored in the second half to rally Columbus past Montreal.
The Crew (10-14-5) ended a four-game unbeaten run for Montreal (13-7-6), which lost at home for only the second time this season. Columbus went 2-0-1 against Montreal this season.
Marco Di Vaio, the MLS scoring leader with 18 goals, got his seventh in five games in the 23rd minute for Montreal. Di Vaio had another good chance but was stopped from in close early in the second half.
Federico Higuain's free kick to the left of the area was headed in by Marshall in the 66th, and Oduro remained onside to receive a pass and put the ball past Troy Perkins in the 79th.
RAPIDS 2, FC DALLAS 1
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) - Vicente Sanchez scored a goal and knocked another in off an opposing player to lift Colorado past FC Dallas on a rainy night.
David Ferreira scored for Dallas (10-8-10), which was dealt a blow in its late-season playoff push by an unfortunate bounce.
Dallas, which went nearly three months without a victory before beating Chivas USA on Aug. 21, came into the game 2-0-1 in its last three to pull within two points of the Rapids for the final postseason spot. However, Colorado (12-8-9) made sure Dallas stayed outside the playoff picture by taking advantage of a miscue.
With the score tied at 1-all, Sanchez sent a ball to the front of the net when Dallas defender Matt Hedges tried to make a sliding deflection. Instead, he knocked it into his own net to give Colorado the lead in the 65th minute.
TIMBERS 1, CHIVAS USA 1
CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Diego Valeri scored in the 50th minute to lift Portland to the draw.
Jose Valencia held the ball inside the area and squared a pass to Valeri, who sent a shot past Chivas goalie Dan Kennedy for his seventh goal of the season. Portland (10-5-13) remained winless in its last eight road matches.
Bryan de la Fuente scored in the 23rd minute for Chivas USA (6-15-8). Carlos Borja sent a cross in from the left side to the middle of the penalty area, where De La Fuente powered a header past Donovan Ricketts.
Chivas scored the first goal for the 10th time in its last 12 games matches, but are just 3-5-4 in that span.
EARTHQUAKES 0, WHITECAPS 0
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - San Jose and Vancouver played to a scoreless draw, damaging both teams' hopes of getting back into the Western Conference playoff picture.
The clubs remain tied for seventh place in the West with 38 points each, five behind fifth-place Portland, which currently holds the conference's final postseason berth.
San Jose extended its home unbeaten streak to 14 matches, but the Earthquakes (10-11-8) snapped six-game home winning streak.
Vancouver (10-10-8) continued its recent slide, dropping to 1-5-3 in its last nine matches.
