Lady Jays go 2-0 in tennis

SPRINGFIELD — Jefferson City swept a pair of matches in the Southwest Invitational on Friday.

The Lady Jays opened the tournament with a 9-0 win against West Plains.

Singles winners for Jefferson City were Kelly Raithel (8-4), Paige Smith (8-4), Eden Hoogveld (8-0), Kirsten Schmidt (8-0), Athira Nambiar (8-1) and Haley Snellen (8-0). In doubles action the team of Smith and Hoogveld won 8-1, Raithel and Schmidt won 8-0, as did Nambiar and Schmidt.

Jefferson City also won a pair of JV matches against West Plains as Delta Verslues won 8-0 and Madeline Brown won 8-1.

The Lady Jays defeated Joplin 9-0 in their semifinal match.

Singles winners for Jefferson City were Raithel (8-2), Smith (8-3), Hoogveld (8-0), Schmidt (8-2), Nambiar (8-3), Snellen (8-6).

Doubles winners for Jefferson City were Raithel and Schmidt (8-6), Nambiar and Snellen (8-2) and Verslues and Brown (8-2).

Jefferson City will take on either Springfield Glendale or Springfield Central at 9 a.m. today for the championship.
