Helias takes down Quincy Notre Dame 51-12

QUINCY, Ill. — The Helias Crusaders could do little wrong in the first half of Friday’s game against Quincy (Ill.) Notre Dame.

The Crusaders scored six first-half touchdowns and routed Notre Dame 51-12 on Friday night.

Helias racked up 420 yards of total offense and was never threatened as they improved to 2-1 on the season.

“That was about as efficient as our offense can run,” Helias head coach Phil Pitts said. “All the guys did great.”

It took the Crusaders a little more than six minutes to get on the board, but after that the Raiders couldn’t stop them.

Garrett Buschjost got the Crusaders on the board with a 5-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. That was just the beginning of the scoring onslaught.

Just more than two minutes later Helias made it 14-0 on a 3-yard touchdown run by Michael Tannehill.

Helias added four touchdowns in the second quarter. Wyatt Porter threw touchdown passes to Buschjost (13 yards) and Tannehill (23 yards). The Crusaders made it 35-0 on a 3-yard run by Buschjost and concluded the first half with a 25-yard interception return by John Rhea.

A 36-yard field goal midway through the third quarter by J.C. Szumigala made it 45-0. Clayton Winter added a 4-yard touchdown run late in the fourth to close out the scoring for Helias.

The Raiders scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Helias finished with 291 yards rushing on 35 attempts and 22 first downs. The Crusaders did not attempt a pass in the second half.

The Crusaders (2-1) play again Friday night at Adkins Stadium against Hickman.

Helias played without senior captain Brock Gerstner who broke his leg in practice Thursday. His status for the rest of the season is unknown.
