Jefferson City parks sales tax improves

The half-cent parks sales tax revenue is increasing, and Jefferson City parks officials say the department may end up with revenues exceeding projections.

At the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting Tuesday, department Director Bill Lockwood said September receipts showed collections came in more than $15,000 above the same period last year and he is estimating the department will finish the fiscal year $18,000 above projections for the year.

The increased revenue is good news, as last month the parks sales tax fell behind projections and the sales tax revenues for the year were running $26,369 short of projections.

In other business, Lockwood said the 2014 budget, which was passed by the City Council earlier this month, puts the department within $300,000 of the $5 million needed for the proposed multipurpose building project.

"That's good news," Lockwood said.

He noted the commission will hold land discussions on the project in closed session.

Tuesday also marked the department's annual report to the City Council, which was held on a barge on the Missouri River.
