Your Opinion: ‘Political genes’ and extremism

Dear Editor:

I was interested in Mr. Horstmann’s recent letter to the editor concerning his “political genetics.” He claims his conservative political views is a result of a genetic heritage linked to those living in the Boston area in the late eighteenth century that participated in the Boston Tea Party.

That should translate into the comparison of Horstmann’s political thinking being somewhat similar to those presently living in Boston, or Massachusetts, or New England.

Luckily, that is not the case. What Horstmann is really telling us about his extreme political opinions is that he is not to be blamed, he was born that way.

Issue-oriented letters to the editor in response to this or about other local topics are welcome. All letters should be limited to 400 words. The author's name must appear with the letter, and the name, address and phone number provided for verification. Letters that cannot be verified by telephone will not be published.
