News Tribune picks up 13 MPA awards

The Missouri Press Association handed out its Better newspaper contest awards Saturday afternoon in Kansas City as part of its 147th convention.

Jim Dyke received first place in Best Editorial Cartoon for "Apocalyse," which ran Jan. 14, 2012; third place for "Isolation," which ran Sept. 24, 2012; and honorable mention for "Rise Again," which ran April 6.

Designers Anne Kettenbrink and Doug Waggoner received second place in Best Front Page for three October editions. Kettenbrink also received an honorable mention for the April 8, 2012, Style page in Best Page Design.

Jeff Haldiman earned second place in Best Breaking News for "Emotions Erupt at Hearing," which ran Feb. 8, 2012.

Tony Hawley won second place as Best Sports Columnist.

Madeleine Leroux received third place in Best Coverage of Government for "City E-mail Contradicts Prop. 2 Supporters," which ran Aug. 7, 2012.

Kris Wilson's "Attention Kid" was an honorable mention in Best News Photo.

Bob Watson earned an honorable mention for the Aug. 12, 2012, Views story "JCPS Continue Work Developing Academies" in the Best Story About Education category.

Michelle Brooks' "Puppies for Parole," which ran May 30, 2012, earned a Best Feature Story honorable mention.

The DVD "Blair Oaks - Road to the Dome" was named an honorable mention in the Community Service category. Those contributing were Tom Rackers, Tony Hawley, Krissy Tripp, Stephen Brooks, Kris Wilson and Julie Smith.

And honorable mention was given for Best Front-to-Back Newspaper Design.
