Prison break race returns for second year

Last year, the popularity of the tours at the old Missouri State Penitentiary prompted officials at the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau to come up with another unique way to promote the site.

So when the Second Annual Prison Break Race takes place this Saturday, organizers are looking for a bigger crowd.

"Last year we had 186 runners and we'd like to have 200 this year," said Chris Wilson, sports and film sales manager with Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau. "The word is getting out about the race. We have people from all over the state coming and one family from Colorado."

The registration and start of the race is at the penitentiary, 115 Lafayette Street, and the end of race will be at Prison Brews, 305 Ash Street.

Public parking is available on Lafayette Street and Ash Street.

Participants need to meet out in front of the prison where you will be led to Housing Unit 3 for registration.

Registration is from 7:30-8:30 a.m.

Participants must be 18 or older and sign a waiver sheet.

There will be a holding room for valuables at Housing Unit 3 and a lock box that will be taken to Prison Brews.

The race goes from 9-11 a.m. with approximately five miles of running and tackling obstacles.

The course will be flagged and volunteers will be on the course.

Water stations will be available throughout the course and racers should not bring food or water into the penitentiary.

Once people complete the race t-shirts will be distributed and free slices of pizza will be given away along with awards from 11 a.m. to noon.
